Oracle releases plug-in for Visual Studio .Net
Oracle Corp. has released a plug-in for Visual Studio .Net 2003 that allows developers using the Microsoft Corp. tool kit to build applications for Oracle's 10g database, Oracle said Tuesday.
The software is part of a broader effort by Oracle to increase sales of its database software on servers running Windows. Microsoft's own SQL Server was the most widely used database on Windows last year, according to research company Gartner Inc.
Oracle released a beta version of the plug-in, called Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio .NET 2003, in February. It originally planned to release the finished product in April, an Oracle spokesman said at the time.
The plug-in will make developers building Oracle applications for Windows servers more productive, according to Oracle. Features include the Oracle Explorer for browsing and altering Oracle schemas, various designers and wizards, and a PL/SQL editor for editing stored procedures and functions from within Visual Studio .Net.
The software is available now as a free download from the Oracle Technology Network, at http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/dotnet/tools/.
Oracle joined Microsoft's Visual Studio Industry Partner program in May last year, promising better integration between the Oracle database and Microsoft's tools.
