Dell ships laptops with self-encrypting drives

Dell announced Monday that it is offering Seagate 's self-encrypting hard drives in its Latitude laptops, Precision Mobile Workstations and OptiPlex desktops as a security precaution to those machines being lost or stolen.

Amateurs and pros vie to build new crypto standard

A contest, sponsored by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), hopes to find a new cryptographic hash algorithm to replace the SHA-2 (Secure Hash Algorithm - 2) algorithm that NIST published eight years ago. The deadline for SHA-3 submissions was Oct. 31, and NIST hopes to cut the field down to 15 or 20 contestants by next August. That's when the hard work of hammering away at the submissions and knocking loose any flaws will really begin.

Should I use Windows' built-in encryption?

Windows 2000, XP Office, Vista Office, and Vista Ultimate all come with the Encrypting File System (EFS), an integrated file and folder encryption system that integrates seamlessly into the operating system. I don't recommend it.
